Questions worth asking before a metals hedge window

A prep list for procurement leads who want the assessment conversation to start at the right altitude.

Hedge windows arrive whether the research is ready or not. The quality of a metals price conversation depends heavily on what is decided before the analyst joins the call.

Bring the physical constraints

Storage limits, customer delivery schedules, and quality tolerances change which price paths are even actionable. An assessment that ignores those constraints will sound clever and still fail the desk.

Separate premium from LME

European aluminium and copper buyers know this instinctively, yet meeting agendas still collapse both into “the metal price.” Ask your adviser to state a view on the exchange reference and a view on the regional premium — even if one is simply “too uncertain to lean on.”

Decide what “success” looks like

Is success avoiding a spike, smoothing budget variance, or protecting a margin already sold downstream? Commodity price trend assessment is sharper when that definition is explicit. Otherwise every chart becomes equally important and nothing is decided.

Bring those answers to a scope conversation, and the written brief that follows will match how your metals book actually runs.
